I'm reading an excellent book at the moment: 'Somewhere Towards the End' by Diana Athill (Granta Publications) In spite of its rather downbeat title, her thoughts on art and life are inspiring:
(Excerpt)
'It was only when I tried to draw a naked body that I began to see how difficult it is, and how important. When you have a naked person in front of you, calmly exposed to your concentrated study, you see how accurate the term' life class' is. What you are looking at is precisely life, that inexplicable and astounding cause of our being, to which everything possible in the way of attenion and respect is due....Since I first tried to draw a nude figure it has seemed to me that what determines the quality of a drawing is the attention and respect, rather than the ingenuity, that an artist has devoted to what he is looking at.'
(End of excerpt)
" To have taken up paintng, no matter at what age, or point in one's life, is to have entered in to a new, and deeper awareness of the whole meaning of existence, to have tasted spiritual refreshment , and to have found the perfect form of creative relaxation."
Mervyn Levy
"When I begin painting I am in a state of unconsciousness; I suddenly forget that I am holding a brush in my hand."
Wu Chen
How fortunate we are that we have access to the rich inner resource of creativity to fortify us against the growing negativity in the markets, and in the worlds complexities. By creating honestly you feed your spirit and give yourself perspective. The problems won't disappear but you'll be better able to resolve them with a stronger spirit. Nourish your soul as well as your body in these straightened times.
More and more I need to retreat into a quiet space to reflect and create to maintain balance. My pencil helps me to see and by seeing to make sense of here and now.
